20 Ways to Politely Tell Someone You Don’t Want to Buy Their Product

If not every day, at least most days in a week, we always need to make certain purchases. Sometimes, it can be by placing an order online or walking into the physical store to make our purchases.

In situations like that, you are the one going for the products because you need them. However, there are times when business owners or entrepreneurs will try to market the products that they sell to you.

They could also come physically and try to convince you to purchase their goods. Well, I don’t know about you, but for me, if I have the money and I feel that the product is something that I would need, I will buy it.

In this article, I will explain twenty (20) ways I politely tell a person that I don’t want to buy their products. Perhaps you wish to do the same thing, you can pick one of the twenty statements below.

1. Thank you for reaching out, but it’s not something I currently need.

Okay, so this is the first on my list cause it’s short, simple, and extremely polite. You first thank the person for reaching out to you then you tell them that if they had reached out to you at a time other than that moment you might have patronized them, but at that time, you don’t need what they are selling.

  • ‘Thank you for reaching out.’
  • ‘You’re welcome.’
  • ‘But it’s not something I currently need.’

2. Thanks for your offer, I am not seeking this product currently

This statement also appreciates the seller’s offer but lets them know that while you are capable of buying their product, you are not in the market for it.

If said literally, it would imply that you are standing physically in the marketplace but there for that product.

  • ‘I sincerely do appreciate your offer.’
  • ‘My pleasure.’
  • ‘But I’m not in the market for this product.’

3. I’ll have to pass on this opportunity, but thank you for thinking of me.

You use this statement when the seller is probably offering you the product with incentives such as discount price, free delivery, free products, etc.

It may be a one-time opportunity that you are not ready for and you have no choice but to pass on the opportunity.

  • ‘This opportunity looks great, but I’m going to have to pass.’
  • ‘Oh’
  • ‘Yeah, but thank you for thinking of me.’

4. I’ll have to respectfully decline your offer, but thank you for contacting me.

This is suitable when the seller reaches out to you either through the mail, call, or text message to tell you about his/her product and make you a special offer.

  • ‘I’ve read your catalog but I’ll have to respectfully decline your offer.’
  • ‘Okay.’
  • ‘Yeah, thank you for contacting me though.’

5. I’m sorry, but certain factors beyond my control have made it impossible for me to proceed at this time.

This response is perfect when you are interested in purchasing the product but you can’t afford to do so due to certain factors beyond your control.

It could be economical, geographical, physical, etc.

  • ‘You can read through the catalog to see the products in stock.’
  • ‘I’m sorry, but certain factors beyond my control have made it impossible for me to proceed at this time.’

6. I’m not in the market for this product, but I appreciate your efforts.

While telling the person that you don’t want to buy their products, you can appreciate them for being hardworking. They probably had a choice to make a living illegally but they chose the right path making society a lot safer.

  • ‘I’m not in the market for this product, but I appreciate your efforts though…’
  • ‘Next time then.’
  • ‘Yeah, keep it up.’

7. Your product sounds interesting, but I’m not looking to make any purchases right now.

There are some products you will hear about and you’ll be intrigued. If perhaps the seller had come at some other conducive time, you may have considered buying the product but at that time you’re not looking to make any purchases.

  • ‘Your product sounds quite interesting.’
  • ‘Thank you.’
  • ‘But I’m not looking to make any purchases right now.’

8. I’m going to have to decline, but I wish you the best with your sales.

Although this polite method is straightforward, it also shows that you care. At least while declining the person’s offer, you’ve also wished them the best in their sales. You can also recommend them to your friends and acquaintances.

  • ‘I’m going to have to decline.’
  • ‘It’s alright.’
  • ‘However, I wish you the best with your sales.’

9. It’s not something I’m looking to invest in presently, it’s not the right fit for me.

You use this response when someone is asking to invest in the manufacturing of their products. You may either get free products as an investor or profit depending on the agreement.

  • ‘This is not something I’m looking to invest in presently.’
  • ‘Oh really?’
  • ‘Yeah, it’s just not the right fit for me.’

10. I’m not in a good financial position to buy this, but I appreciate you for considering me.

This response not only declines the person’s offer but lets them know the reason why you declined their offer.  It lets them know that you don’t have the financial prowess to purchase their product(s).

  • ‘I’m not in a good financial position to buy this.’
  • ‘That’s okay.’
  • ‘But I appreciate you for considering me.’

11. Your offer looks enticing, but I’m not ready to commit to anything right now.

Some offers come with tempting incentives such as 50% off the original price, free shipping to any location, buy 1 get 1 free offer, etc. However, if despite how enticing the offers are you’re still not ready to commit, don’t hesitate to let them know.

  • ‘Your offer looks enticing.’
  • ‘I know right?’ I am not ready.

12. I’ve reviewed the details, and I don’t think it’s a good match for my needs.

If you have a particular need and have been searching for a product to satisfy that need or solve that problem, but the product a seller is offering to you does not cover what you need, you can use this response to politely decline their offer.

  • ‘I’ve reviewed the details.’
  • ‘What do you think?’
  • ‘I think it’s not quite a good match for my needs.’

13. I’ve given it some thought, and I’m going to have to say no, thank you anyway.

This response is used if the person had told you about their product days ago, and you are just responding.

Maybe you had told the person to give you time to think about whether or not you want to buy their product.

  • ‘I’ve given it some thought.’
  • ‘And what is your decision?’
  • ‘I’m going to have to say no. Thank you anyways.’

14. It’s not what I’m looking for at the moment, but thanks for pitching it to me.

There are times when you are looking for products and you ask for people to recommend for you where you can get them. Most times the recommendation will not match the exact product that you were searching for hence the rejection.

  • ‘Oh, this is not what I’m looking for at the moment.’
  • ‘Sorry about that.’
  • ‘No problem. Thanks for pitching it to me anyway.’

15. I checked my account balance, and have decided to hold off on making any purchases for now.

Yup, this response is as straightforward as it gets. It is a sarcastic way to tell someone that you would love to get their product but the balance you have in your account cannot afford it. If you wish to be as realistic as possible, then this is the right response to use.

  • ‘I checked my account balance,…’
  • ‘And?’
  • ‘I have decided to hold off on making any purchases for now.’

16. Nothing is wrong with your product, I’m simply not interested in buying.

This response is an attempt to placate the seller by letting them know that your unwillingness to buy their products is not because anything is wrong with the product itself but because it simply does not interest you.

  • ‘Nothing is wrong with your product.’
  • ‘Is that right?’
  • ‘Yeah, I’m simply not interested in buying it.’

17. I’ve considered your offer, but I’m still going to say no.

As you know, some sellers can try to be quite persuasive when selling their products. They might make so many enticing offers hoping to change your mind. If your stand is still the same (no), then this is the right response to use.

  • ‘I’ve considered your offer…’
  • ‘Have you changed your mind?’
  • ‘I’m still going to say no.’

18. I’ve decided to hold off on making any purchases for now, I wish you more sales though.

This response is most suitable when you have the money but the scale of preference demands that you use it to attend to more important needs than the product the seller is offering.

  • ‘I’ve decided to hold off on making any purchases for now.’
  • ‘I understand.’
  • ‘I wish you more sales though.’

19. I’m so tempted to buy it, but it’s beyond my budget for the week.

Have you ever been in a situation where the right product comes at the wrong time? Well, I have; and when it does, this is the response that I use.

  • ‘I’m so tempted to buy it.’
  • ‘Buy then.’
  • ‘It’s beyond my budget for the week.’

20. I wish you had come earlier, I don’t have any money on me right now, sorry darling.

For some of us who have to work and budget our expenses, this may be the most fitting response to use. Especially if you want to buy the product, but have spent more than you budgeted for the week.

  • ‘I wish you had come earlier.’
  • ‘Am I too late?’
  • ‘Yeah, I don’t have any money on me right now, sorry darling.’

To Summarize

You must understand that you must be polite to a vendor. They already have a hard time trying to convince customers to buy their products, and it will not be nice having to also deal with difficult customers. You can say no without being rude about it. Ensure you make use of all the examples I have given in this article.
